Salespeak
I felt two different ways with this article. First, I do not believe advertising has gotten that out of hand. People still have minds, and many people are frugal with their spending, they do not go out and buy everything in sight. Also, when it comes to school selling out companies, I personally applaud them. When it comes to schools their main objective is to teach students and they need to reach certain levels on standardized testing. With the money they receive from these companies they can buy new textbooks, hire more teachers, get more desks and improve the school atmosphere in general. Second I do believe commercials are starting to become ridiculous, especially on television. When watching a one hour show many times the commercials will take up to fifteen minutes that hour, and sometimes even more. It has gotten to a point where I do not even watch live television anymore, instead I record it back later in order to fast forward through the commercials. It is my sincere hope that we will not get so absorbed with advertising that we name our children after them. I agree with Fox when he says that a name describes an individual, Society should not lose their grip on that. Individuality is hard enough to get, and maintain without associating yourself with a soft drink company.
5,000 new best pals
The internet has become very popular in its short lifespan. It is barely 20 years old, yet everyone either has it, or goes to places in order to use it. My generation is the worst offender, especially college students, we are on the computer at least six times a day, most of the time just to check facebook. It is on facebook, that individuals look at other profiles, view new pictures and basically stalk people to see what they have been up to. Then there are friend requests, many times that are from people you do know, but also many times from people you do not. The funny thing is that many times the hardest one to chose to say yes or no to are the ones that you do know. Often old acquaintances from high school will friend you, and you wonder "but we were no even friends?, I do not understand?" In these cases these people might just want to know what you have been up to, to see if you are or not popular in college . It is these times where it all depends on the status of your profile that decides whether or not you friend them. If you have a lot of pictures of college with a lot of friends, and it looks like you are having an awesome time, then you friend them. If you do not, the you reject the request. It is here that one can really say that many times facebook is just another popularity contest.
